about

THING-THING is my homage to contemporary jazz piano. I was thinking of 4 piano players that have influenced me at various stages of my musical learning: Bill Evans, Lennie Tristano, Keith Jarrett, and Gonzalo Rubalcaba. The first three have very distinct versions of the song “What Is This Thing Called Love” (Tristano’s version under the title “Subconscious-lee”). Their versions of this song have always haunted me, each one’s for a different reason. Rubalcaba’s solo playing has always piqued my interest. The way he will change tempos and phrasing at any moment without sacrificing the essence of the song is highly appealing. I used the four pianists’ distinct influences to make this song.
