about

One of the earliest songs I learned was EL PLEBEYO, by the “Immortal Bard”, Felipe Pinglo Alva, Peruvian composer of the beginning of the 20th century. He died at a young age, but not before changing the musical landscape of Peru forever. His songs became part of the national musical tradition. I learned this song at age 12, when I was studying guitar. And the lyrics, that speak of social justice in the context of a forbidden love, stuck with me to this day. My version of the song is also a tribute to two amazing Peruvian performers, singer Arturo “Zambo” Cavero and guitarist Oscar Avilés. In the introduction I reference two songs from their iconic album “Los Unicos”: “Natalia” and “Bendito Amor”.
