about

Maria Isabel “Chabuca” Granda was one of the most important composers of Peruvian music of the 20th century. Her songs have become an indelible part of our culture. Her untimely passing was a notable blow to the music of Peru, and yielded a series of tributes, one of which was the song CHABUCA LIMEÑA by Spanish composer Manuel Alejandro. Even though this song was widely played in Peru, it wasn’t by a Peruvian composer; and it always felt aesthetically out of place for me, even when I didn’t quite know why. This song has an unusual harmonic makeup for a traditional Peruvian vals, and I noticed it even when I was young, before I learned about its origin. Nevertheless, as it has been the case with several elegiac works throughout my life, the song stayed with me.
